2-WEEK INTENSIVE  TEACHER’S TRAINING and US CULTURE  PROGRAM – MADISON, WISCONSIN

WHEN: July 14-25,2020.

PROGRAM INFORMATION 

OBJECTIVE:

The following outlines (a two-week intensive Teacher Training Program TTP) for English language faculty from FECAP and  national  partner  universities. The TTP program is designed to help faculty expand on their existing English Language teaching skills and earn a TEFL certificate upon completion of the program. The TTP proposal is prepared for FECAP  and it`s  partners  for a minimum group of 10 faculty members. Cost for the TTP is outlined on a cost per student (CPS) basis. 

WESLI –  WISCONSIN ESL INSTITUTE

An Institution Founded in 1981, WESLI has earned an excellent reputation among universities and colleges for equipping international students with skills to succeed in competitive academic environments. Students from all over the world have had satisfying, memorable cross-cultural experiences at WESLI and in Madison. WESLI has a long history of a family-like atmosphere, as teachers and staff care about students personally while they assist them academically. Most staff members have lived abroad, speak one or more foreign languages, have years of experience teaching English, and have been at WESLI for more than 15 years. The Teacher Training Program was established in 1999 and is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA), approved by the Wisconsin Educational Approval Board, and aligned with TESOL International’s Standards for Short-Term Certificate Programs. The mission of Wisconsin English as a Second Language Institute (WESLI), a for-profit, stand-alone IEP, is to prepare student to be collaborative leaders in their chosen academic and professional environments. WESLI will accomplish this mission through exceptional ESL Instruction and Student Services; guided by the following principles as applied to all areas of the organization, staff and students.

PROGRAM CURRICULUM Intensive Teacher Training Program: 

CORE OBJECTIVES:

The full-time study curriculum will include courses in the five core disciplines – Learning Theory, Lesson Planning, Assessment & Constructive Feedback, Practicum, and Language Skills, including grammar, phonetics and pronunciation. These total 45 hours per week. In addition, these classes will assign homework, for approximately 8-10 hours per week. Students may join other WESLI TTP students in these core classes, maximizing language learning potential by forcing students to communicate in English with other students. These classes will have a maximum of 20 students from a variety of other countries.

 In addition to the core Learning Outcomes of the TTP, the following Learning Outcomes will be addressed: 

• How to teach pedagogical grammar. 

• How to teach phonetics for high school teachers and phonics for primary school teachers • How to teach culture based on American English, what is culturally acceptable an what is not

 • How to evaluate (assessment and testing based on the Common European Framework • How to work with competencies • What are the XXI century skills that students must have?

 • How to teach accent reduction for non-native speakers • How to improve fluency and intonation.

Proposed Activities

Students have the opportunity to attend a variety of activities during their stay in Madison, designed to give students a taste of life in Wisconsin. Additional activities may be arranged based on student interest.WESLI teachers will accompany students on all activities so that students maximize their learning. Sample activities include:

 Weekday Activities

 • Tour of the state capitol building 

• Overture Center for the Arts (Plays/Music Performances) 

• Ice Skating Weekend Activities

 • Local Brewery Tour and Tasting

 • Winery and vineyard visits 

• Shopping and dining on State Street

 • Hockey Game

HOUSING & SERVICES Accommodations. 

WESLI has a private student residence, located just one block from the school. Included in this proposal is accommodation in the residence on a shared twin room basis. The residence is an apartment style accommodation with full kitchen, living room and balcony. Each apartment has two bedrooms and two bathrooms.

 Airport Pickup:

 A WESLI team member will pick students up from the Dane County Regional Airport in Madison. If the group arrives at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, they can take the Van Galder coach bus to Madison (round trip tickets cost $60) and WESLI will pick them up from the bus station. Orientation Upon arrival, students will receive a thorough orientation to WESLI and Madison. To complete enrollment, students will need to bring their passport, and health insurance information (if they already have health insurance)

The fees below list all fees on a per student basis, for each of the 10 group members.
